EV-only plans: check the price at your address

These plans make some or all EV charging free, but their prices are only shown for a specific address. Enter the energy charge from the plan's Electricity Facts Label and the calculator puts it into the same comparison. Until you do, it shows the highest energy charge at which the plan would still beat the cheapest plan above.

What the plans cost with a typical Texas EV

The tables below use one fixed household: 1,000 kWh a month without the car, plus 1,000 miles a month at 30 kWh per 100 miles with 10% charging loss (333 kWh a month from the wall) on a 7.2 kW Level 2 charger, and 32% of household use between 9 pm and 6 am. "Scheduled" means the car is set to charge in the cheapest hours each plan offers while it is parked at home (6 pm to 7 am on weekdays, all day on weekends).

When the car charges matters more than which plan you pick In Oncor territory, with the car scheduled to charge overnight, Reliant Free Overnight 12 is the cheapest plan we checked. Plug the same car in at 6 pm and let it charge straight away, and that plan drops to last: the car alone then costs $88 a month on it, and Rhythm Simply Select 36 becomes the cheapest. The same flip happens in CenterPoint territory. Set the charging schedule in the car or charger app before you switch to a free-hours plan.

Oncor Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, Tyler, Midland-Odessa

With the default household below, Reliant Free Overnight 12 comes out cheapest at about $183 a month for the whole home, and charging the car adds $0 of that when it charges in the plan's cheapest hours ($88 if it starts charging the moment it is plugged in at 6 pm). The most expensive plan we checked here costs $57 a month more.

Four ways Texas plans discount EV charging

Free nights. Energy is free for part of every night and the daytime price is higher to pay for it. They work when the car does most of its charging in the free window — and when the rest of the house is not running the air conditioner hard in the expensive afternoon hours.

Free weekends. The same idea for Friday night to Sunday. Only useful if the car can do most of a week's charging on Saturday and Sunday.

Time of use. A low price most of the day and a high price in the evening peak. Rhythm's PowerShift plans charge roughly three times as much from 6 to 10 pm, which is exactly when an unscheduled car starts charging after the drive home.

EV-only credits. Only the car's charging is discounted, measured by your charger or by the car itself, so the rest of the house keeps a normal price. Each one needs specific hardware or a specific car brand.

"Free" nights still carry a delivery charge — usually

Every kWh you use in Texas pays the wires company that delivers it. That delivery charge is set by the state, not by your plan:

Delivery areaCoversPer monthPer kWh
OncorDallas-Fort Worth, Waco, Tyler, Midland-Odessa$4.066.9¢
CenterPointHouston and surrounding area$4.906.5¢
AEP Texas CentralCorpus Christi, McAllen, Laredo, Victoria$3.245.7¢

On most free-nights and EV plans the energy charge drops to zero but this delivery charge stays, so a "free" kWh still costs you 5.7¢–6.9¢. The exceptions in our list are Reliant Free Overnight 12, Reliant Truly Free Nights 100% Solar 12 and Reliant Truly Free Weekends 12: their EFLs set the delivery charge in the free hours to $0 as well and recover it in the daytime price.

Plans that do not accept EV owners

Always read the eligibility section of an EFL before you switch: a plan that bans EVs can bill you at its regular price, or drop you, once the provider sees a car charging every night.

Where this calculator works

It covers the Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central delivery areas. Other competitive areas — AEP Texas North (Abilene, San Angelo), TNMP (League City, Texas City, Lewisville, Alpine), Lubbock Power & Light (Lubbock) — are not covered yet. Residents of Austin (Austin Energy), San Antonio (CPS Energy), El Paso (El Paso Electric) cannot choose a retail electricity plan; their city utility sets one rate.

Texas residential electricity averaged 16.0¢ per kWh all-in over the twelve months to August 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration; that is the default in the "your current rate" box. See EV charging stations in Texas for public chargers.
