The Charging Ledger · Month 1 · 25 Sep – 25 Oct 2026
The network grew by 1,329 sites in a month. Tesla built 72% of the new fast-charging capacity.
We copied the U.S. Department of Energy's registry of public EV charging locations every night from 25 Sep 2026 to 25 Oct 2026 and compared each copy with the one before. This report is everything that moved — and how much of it was real change rather than bookkeeping.
00 — Key findings
- +1,329
Net growth of 1.6%. 84,212 listed locations on 25 Sep, 85,541 on 25 Oct. Section 01
- 72%
Tesla built most new fast capacity. 1,773 of the 2,477 net new DC fast ports. Section 04
- 45%
Growth arrives in batches. Three nights carried 45% of all additions; the median night added 45. Section 02
- 495
Not every event is real change. 370 records dropped out and came back; 125 came and went. Net of those, 2,123 arrived and 794 left. Section 01
- 55%
Added is not opened. 1,177 of the 2,123 new listings had opened before the window; 805 before 2025. Section 07
- 890
Some outages never end. 52% of resolved outages lasted one night, but 890 sites were out of service on every copy. Section 06
01 — The month in one equation
2,618 additions and 1,289 removals — but only 2,123 records truly arrived and 794 truly left.
A nightly diff counts events, not stations. 370 records dropped out of the registry and came back under the same ID — 231 of them after a single night — and another 125 appeared and vanished within the month. Strip those round trips out of both sides and the identity holds exactly: 2,123 − 794 = +1,329, the same as the change in the station count.

02 — Night by night
Three nights brought 45% of all additions. The median night added 45.
The registry grows in batches. On 9 nights more than 100 listings arrived; on 16 of the 30 nights fewer than 50 did. The count fell on 7 nights.
606 of them ChargePoint Network.
286 of them Zefnet.

Bars are the median night; the right column is the mean, which a single big batch can inflate. Mon and Sun pulls are consistently quiet.
03 — The five biggest nights
Each big night was one network filing in bulk.
- Wed21 Oct+625 −150 removed
ChargePoint Network filed 606 of the 625 listings. Most additions: California 156, New York 70, Washington 53.
- Tue29 Sep+325 −89 removed
Zefnet filed 286 of the 325 listings. The network had 4 listings the night before. Most additions: Minnesota 199, Wisconsin 26, California 12.
- Thu8 Oct+221 −50 removed
Tesla filed 124 of the 221 listings. Most additions: California 43, Florida 23, Texas 22.
- Sat10 Oct+169 −59 removed
ChargePoint Network filed 152 of the 169 listings. Most additions: California 78, Massachusetts 46, Colorado 11.
- Thu15 Oct+127 −94 removed
ChargePoint Network filed 93 of the 127 listings. Most additions: Massachusetts 39, California 28, New York 11.
04 — Fast-charging capacity
+2,477 DC fast ports. Tesla added 1,773 of them.
Almost all new fast-charging capacity arrived as new sites; existing sites added a net +19 fast ports between them. ChargePoint, which filed the most new listings, added +30 — its growth is Level 2.
Where the +2,477 came from
485 of the 2,123 new listings have fast chargers. Largest expansion at an existing site: Cache Creek Casino Resort, Brooks, CA (EVolv Charging), 5 → 18 ports.
Net change by network
Net change, 25 Sep → 25 Oct; right column is listings added / removed. 4 listings switched network, so added minus removed can differ from net for the networks involved.
05 — States
Minnesota grew 20.6% in a month.
California added the most sites (+264), but at +1.3% it grew slower than 22 other states and territories. 45 grew, 4 shrank and 3 did not move.

06 — Reliability
2,742 outages began. 52% of those that ended lasted one night — but 890 sites were out the whole month.
An outage here is a run of nights on which a network reports a listed site as temporarily unavailable. Of the 1,643 sites out of service on 25 Sep, 890 were still out on every one of the following 30 copies. Networks that never report outages look perfect in this data; that is a limit of the source, not a finding.

Right column: sites listed on 25 Oct.
Sites reported out of service, each night · 1,643 → 1,747
2,009 different sites had at least one outage; 387 had two or more. The 2,742 outages include 65 sites that entered the registry already marked out of service.
07 — Added is not opened
More than half of the month's new listings had opened before the month began.
Each listing carries an opening date reported by its network. Of the 2,123 listings that arrived and stayed, 941 opened during the window and 805 had opened before 2025 — sites the registry is only now catching up with. A new listing is a reporting event; the opening date says when the charger was built.
Each square ≈ 21 listings. 5 listings carry no opening date.
Reporting lag: opening date → first nightly copy
Median 167 days
930 listings appeared within a week of opening; 927 appeared more than a year late.
08 — Plugs
The Tesla plug reached 10,023 locations. Non-Tesla fast sites with it rose by 108.
Locations listing each connector at the start and end of the month, and every flow in between. Retrofits are rare: 34 existing sites added the NACS plug; 17 existing sites dropped CHAdeMO.
| NACS (Tesla) | 9,730 → 10,023 | +314 | +34 | −4 | −51 | +293 |
| CCS | 13,121 → 13,340 | +367 | +3 | −4 | −147 | +219 |
| CHAdeMO | 5,827 → 5,863 | +117 | +4 | −17 | −68 | +36 |
| J1772 | 66,531 → 67,536 | +1,697 | +1 | −45 | −648 | +1,005 |
Start ○ and end ● on a zoomed scale for each row. NACS includes TESLA and J3400 codes. Fast-charging locations (excluding planned) listing NACS: 4,968 → 5,235; of them not on a Tesla network: 1,833 → 1,941; Tesla Superchargers: 3,135 → 3,294.
09 — Free charging and the pipeline
Free charging shrank by 95 locations. Only 19 planned sites opened.
10 — Method and data quality
Every number here reconciles with the archive.
Source. U.S. Department of Energy, Alternative Fuels Data Center station list, public EV locations, copied twice a day; the last copy of each day is that day's record. The window runs from the copy of 25 Sep 2026 to the copy of 25 Oct 2026: 31 copies, 30 comparisons.
Checks that must pass before publication. Station count change equals additions minus removals on every night; state and network totals equal the national total on every night; each state's change equals its additions minus removals; additions and removals reconcile with the records that arrived, left, returned or came and went; DC port change equals new sites minus removed sites plus existing sites.
Correction. Our daily series recorded 0 additions and 0 removals for 27 September. The change log for that night shows 15 additions, 9 removals and 136 edits, which matches the +6 in the station count. The site and this report read daily movement from the change log.
What this data cannot say. A listing leaving the registry is not proof a charger closed. Outage status is whatever each network reports, and some never report. This edition is fixed: figures will not change after publication; any correction is noted here.
Registry freshness on 25 Oct
82.7% of listings were confirmed by their network in the last 30 days. 147 carry no opening date.
