The Charging Ledger: a monthly report on America's public EV chargers

Every night we copy the U.S. Department of Energy's registry of public charging locations and compare it with the night before. Once a month we reconcile all of it — what arrived, what left, what went dark, which networks and states moved — into one report. Each edition covers the 25th to the 25th and never changes after publication.

How each edition is built

The figures come from our nightly archive of the federal list: 31 copies per edition, the station-level change log for each night, and the opening date, status, ports and connectors of every listing. Before an edition is published, the archive must pass a reconciliation check: on every night, the change in the station count equals additions minus removals, and state and network totals add up to the national figure.
